Back in November 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed Shaheen as the T20I captain after former skipper Babar Azam stepped down following a disappointing World Cup for Pakistan.
However, his tenure as T20I skipper was short-lived: after a series defeat to New Zealand, he was replaced.
Meanwhile, on the domestic front he had been leading his franchise, the Lahore Qalandars, with distinction in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
Most recently, in October 2025, he has been named the ODI captain of Pakistan, replacing Mohammad Rizwan.
